Los Angeles authorities said 25 police trainees were injured, five of them in critical condition, when a car crashed into them Wednesday while jogging without braking, according to an investigation so far.
A group of trainee police officers, mostly recruits from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Office, were on their morning run when they were hit by an oncoming SUV. He hit them around 6:30 am local time (4:30 pm Greek time).
The crash site resembled a “plane crash,” Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva said during a press conference. There were human bodies “scattered everywhere, with various injuries”, you could even see the “dismembered” recruits. He added that one of them was intubated.
In the footage and photographs from the scene of the accident, a black SUV stands on the pavement with a torn front end. The fire department confirmed he was in oncoming traffic when he hit the police trainees, according to the Los Angeles Times.
According to the sheriff, some of the trainees said they heard the car accelerate before it crashed into them.
According to Mr. Villanueva, the driver, who was arrested on the spot, was not under the influence of alcohol. However, according to police sources who spoke to the Los Angeles Times, he told officers he “fell asleep” at the wheel.
A 22-year-old man underwent toxicology tests to determine if he was under the influence of drugs.
