To instrumentalize the judiciary in Turkey its speaker speaks for political purposes European Parliament for Turkey, Nacho Sánchez Amor, referring to the trial of the mayor of Istanbul, Ekrem Imamoglu.
In particular, he notes: “The trial of Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu, postponed today to December 14, is something unthinkable for any democratic state. A prosecutor demanding jail time and a political ban for such a comment shows how the judiciary in Turkey is clearly being used for political ends.”
Recall that the Turkish prosecutor today asked the court to convict Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu for insulting civil servants and impose deprivation of political rights on the popular political opponent of President Tayyip Erdogan, but the case was postponed until December.
Imamoglu, 52, who was not present in court, is on trial for speaking out in 2019 about an annulled mayoral election that same year, in which he called those who decided to re-run elections “idiots.”
Opinion polls show that Imamoglu will be a major problem for Erdogan if the former runs for president next year.
