Democrats big upset: Senate win, narrow House split

Even Joe Biden if he decides not to run again in 2024, when he is 82, his political footprint will be extremely important.

In terms of the international image of the most powerful country on the planet, with his victory over him Donald Trump in 2020, he stopped a dangerous ideological and institutional decline.

And now, at home, with the results of the midterm elections, despite his personal weaknesses and economic situation, he and his party have succeeded in defeating votes questioning democratic rules and institutions, culminating in the January 6 attack on Capitol.

Most lost were Republican candidates who challenged the results of the 2020 presidential election, damaging the prestige of the country.

The Democrats have achieved historic success that has overturned tradition. They retained the majority in the Senate and can increase their composition by one seat (we will find out on December 6 after the second round of elections in the state of Georgia). That was completed today with the re-election of the current Democratic senator in the crucial state of Nevada and indeed at the expense of an opponent backed by former President Donald Trump who was among the contenders for the 2020 election results.

Senate control is extremely important not only for the promotion of legislation, but also for the confirmation of members of the Supreme Court and other important officials. Now any choice of President Biden will be carried out unhindered, since the Republicans do not have the institutional tools to block or reject them.

At the same time, in the most representative legislature of the country, the House of Representatives, the Democrats have created a huge stir, sharply limiting the losses traditionally suffered by the party that controls the executive branch in the midterm elections.

The difference seems insignificant. Control in the House requires a majority of 218 seats out of 435, and according to indications (in some districts the count is ongoing) the Republicans will have only 219 deputies to 216 for the Democrats.

In fact, the success is attributed to Joe Biden himself, who, despite noticeable senility, won the presidency by a landslide in 2020 and led a party that did a great, much better than expected 2022 result.
