Military armored vehicles transported to Libya the merchant ship MV Meerdijk, which appeared after an echelon check of the multinational force participating in Operation Peace, which is tasked with complying with an arms embargo on an African country.
In particular, one of the warships operating in the central Mediterranean Sea noticed a suspicious vessel heading for Libya. At the request of the company’s management, the Netherlands, as the ship’s flag state, immediately agreed to conduct the relevant inspection and October 11a special boarding party was sent.
The group found dozens of military vehicles in what may be a violation of the UN arms embargo on Libya. The vehicles were confiscated and the vessel sent to a European port for further inspection. There, after being inspected by a UN panel of experts, the vehicles were stored on land.
