At least three factories in North Korea’s capital, Pyongyang, as well as other factories in other parts of the country, are said to be producing “large quantities” of winter uniforms, underwear and shoes for Russian soldiers fighting against Ukraine, Radio Free Asia reported. Kyiv Independent reports with reference to anonymous sources.

The factories use Russian raw materials and plan to export uniforms through the Tyumen-Hasan freight train, located in the eastern part of the Russian Federation, not far from the Tyumen River, which marks the border of the Russian state with North Korea. The route was resumed on November 2 after an almost three-year break due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

“Thanks to these new orders for military uniforms for Russian soldiers in Ukraine, some garment factories in Pyongyang are earning foreign currency again,” one source told Radio Free Asia after a forced pause due to the pandemic.

In 2017, the UN Security Council voted to ban all textile exports from North Korea.

On November 4, the Russian embassy in Pyongyang said that Russia is “interested in buying clothes and shoes” from North Korea.
