Philippines: Tropical Storm Nalge kills at least 72 people

At least 72 people have died as a result of flooding and mudslides in the southern Philippines caused by Tropical Storm Nalge, the National Disaster Management Council (NDRRMC) said today.

The province of Maguindanao has the highest number of casualties (67), while two people died in Sultan Kundarat, two in South Cotabato and one in the Visayas region, NDRRMC spokesman Bernardo Rafaelito Alejandro told DZMM radio station. He added that 33 people were injured, the fate of 14 people is unknown.

Tropical Storm Nalgue, sustained winds of 95 km/h (with gusts up to 160 km/h), began to hit the eastern province of Catanduanes on Saturday. The capital region is expected to experience heavy rainfall as it crosses Luzon towards the South China Sea, according to the Philippine Meteorological Service.

Search and rescue teams pulled dozens of bodies out of murky waters yesterday Friday after a tropical storm caused widespread flooding and landslides.

On average, the Philippines is hit by 20 tropical storms every year.
