The first African president to visit Kyiv since the start of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Embalo met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi on February 24, a day after visiting Russia, where he also met with President Vladimir Putin.

“Africa needs more than just fertilizer or grain. Africa also brings peace and wants to bring these two brotherly countries together so that we can really find a way to peace between Russia and Ukraine,” said the president of Guinea-Bissau during a press conference with Zelenskyi.

“I was with Putin yesterday, and if he (President Zelensky) and President Putin believe that Guinea-Bissau and Africa can bring a solution for peace, we are the first activists of this,” he repeated.

“Brother…” he said, addressing his Ukrainian colleague, “I also told Putin, brother, because someday they will meet again, that’s why we came to bring a message of peace between the two brothers. And we can build a bridge for reunification,” he pleaded.

Zelensky was more skeptical about the idea of dialogue with Putin.

“Regarding the signals from Russia sent by the president of Guinea-Bissau, Russia wants to establish a dialogue. But in order to establish a dialogue between states, it is necessary that one of them does not affect the infrastructure of the other,” said the Ukrainian president.

Embalo also assured that he would “ask” the President of the Russian Federation to “release” more than 165 ships that are stuck near the Bosphorus, and Ukraine accuses Russia of deliberately detaining these grain carriers, delaying inspections that are carried out in accordance with the agreement concluded by these most important supplies for many countries in Africa and Asia

Confirming that “Russia is always our strategic partner (in Africa),” Embalo assured that “Ukraine is also our partner.”

“There is no ambiguity in what I say, it cannot be interpreted,” he insisted, recalling Guinea-Bissau’s vote on October 13 at the UN General Assembly for a resolution condemning Russia’s “illegal annexations” of Ukrainian territories.
