U.S. President Joe Biden on Thursday expressed concern about U.S. military aid to Ukraine if Republicans gain control of Congress – either entirely or in one of the two houses (House or Senate) – in the Nov. 8 midterm elections.
“I’m concerned,” Biden told reporters in Pittsburgh when asked about the impact of a potential Republican victory on continued US aid to Ukraine.
President Biden visited Pittsburgh to support the campaign of Democratic Senate nominee John Vetterman, who is opposed by Republican Mehmet Oz.
A few days ago, House Republican leader Kevin McCarthy said he would not be “ready to sign carte blanche” on aid to Ukraine if Republicans wrested control of the House from Democrats after the midterm elections.
Republicans are divided into those who consider Russia a necessity and those who prefer isolationism to foreign policy intervention.
The total cost of US aid to Ukraine has been estimated at more than $17.5 billion since the start of the Russian invasion on February 24.
