Russian news sites began interviewing virologists about the danger of spreading “Ukrainian anthrax” to Russia.

For example, this danger was “assessed” for a Moscow radio station by a specialist in particularly dangerous infectious diseases, Vladyslav Yemtsyugov, after it was reported that a goat had contracted anthrax in the Kyiv region.

However, the virologist urged Russians not to worry about this.

“Everything is fine in our country, there is an excellent vaccine for people and animals,” Yemchugov assured.

He also said that “there was a system [de sănătate] good in Ukraine as well as in the entire Soviet Union,” adding that “there are competent infectious disease specialists in the Russian army.”

The virologist explained that the evolution of the disease depends on the place of infection with the bacillus that causes the disease.

“The most dangerous thing is if it enters the lungs with dust or enters the intestines together with infected meat,” said the specialist.

Earlier, Serhii Netesov from the Russian Academy of Sciences told one of the most popular Russian news sites “Lenta” that there are dozens of cattle pits in the regions of the country, where the corpses of animals infected with anthrax are buried.

Russian propaganda revives the theory about anthrax laboratories in Ukraine

According to him, there is no publicly available accurate data on their number and location. However, even according to some official data, only in the Novosibirsk region there are at least six burial sites of disinfected corpses of animals suffering from anthrax.

Back in March, Russian propaganda began to write about the fact that its armed forces had discovered “biological laboratories” in Ukraine, where experiments are conducted with dangerous pathogens, such as the causative agents of anthrax and plague.

This conspiracy theory, promoted by Moscow, initially claimed that Ukraine should have conducted these experiments together with the US, but later Maria Zakharova, a spokeswoman for the Russian Foreign Ministry, also implicated Germany in the alleged conspiracy.

Although that propaganda line appears to have fallen by the wayside in recent months as defeats suffered by Russian forces at the front raised more pressing questions, in early September Russia brought up the idea again, saying the alleged labs should be handed over by the Pentagon to former Soviet republics, Eastern European and Baltic countries “as soon as possible”.

The deputy US ambassador to the UN, Richard Mills, called Russia’s statements about Washington’s alleged involvement in the biological weapons program in Ukraine “categorical lies and ridiculous.”
