Great Britain has imposed sanctions against three Iranians and Shahed Aviation Industries, the company responsible for supplying Russia with drones used to bomb Ukraine, according to a press release from the British Foreign Office, The Guardian reports, News.ro reports.

Russia launched dozens of kamikaze drones over Ukraine, targeting energy infrastructure, in attacks that killed five people in Kyiv this week. Tehran denies it supplied drones to Moscow, and the Kremlin denies its forces used Iranian drones to attack Ukraine on Tuesday.

By providing these drones, Iran is “escalating the war, taking advantage of Russia’s horrific attacks on Ukrainian citizens, causing even more human suffering and exacerbating the destruction of critical infrastructure,” the UK Foreign Office said in a statement.

The United Kingdom is targeting the same companies and individuals that the European Union has imposed sanctions on.

Shahed Aviation Industries, which Britain says manufactured the drones, has frozen its assets. The chief of staff of Iran’s armed forces, General Mohammed Hossein Bagheri, the logistics officer, General Syed Khojatollah Qureish, and the commander of the Revolutionary Guard Corps, Brigadier General Saeed Aghajani, have been placed under London sanctions. Their assets are frozen, as well as an entry ban.

“Iran’s support for Putin’s brutal and illegal war against Ukraine is regrettable. Today (not Thursday) we impose sanctions on those who provided the drones with which Russia fired at peaceful Ukrainians. This is clear evidence of Iran’s destabilizing role in global security,” said British Foreign Minister James Cleverley.

“These cowardly drone attacks are an act of desperation. By enabling the attacks, these individuals and the manufacturer caused untold suffering to the people of Ukraine. We will make sure that they are held accountable for their actions,” he concluded.

Members of the European Union agreed on new sanctions against Iran, accused of supplying drones used by the Russian military in Ukraine, the Czech EU presidency announced on Thursday. Moscow condemned on Thursday the “pressure” exerted on Tehran by Washington and Brussels, Reuters and AFP reported. According to a list of sanctions seen by AFP prior to their adoption, the sanctions specifically target Iran’s Shahed Aviation Industries, maker of the Shahed drones that Russia uses in Ukraine.
