U.S. counterpart Lloyd Austin discussed issues of common interest to the U.S. and Turkey with Turkish Defense Minister Hulusi Akar on Wednesday, according to a Pentagon statement.
The purpose of the dialogue was “to reaffirm broad common interests between the US and Turkey,” the US Department of Defense said, indicating the need for Washington to remind Ankara that they are NATO allies.
“This conversation was a continuation of the meeting of NATO defense ministers in Brussels last week,” the statement said.
“They discussed the importance of regional stability and reviewed ongoing defense cooperation,” the Pentagon said in a statement.
The telephone conversation between the two ministers took place after the strengthening of Russian-Turkish cooperation in many areas, including trade and energy.
