The first deaths of Russian conscripts provoke new criticism of the Russian military command, the Institute for the Study of War notes in its latest analysis.

Pro-war Russian military bloggers say the number of dead and wounded among the troops mobilized on the orders of Vladimir Putin on September 21 is likely higher than the official figure due to a lack of training, equipment, unit cohesion and command.

Russian mass media reported that five servicemen mobilized from Chelyabinsk had already died fighting in Ukraine only three weeks after the partial mobilization.

One of the bloggers wrote on Thursday that the disorderly deployment of these troops in Ukraine “will lead to 10,000 dead and 40,000 wounded among them by February 2023.”

The mobilization campaign will not provide enough combat-ready Russian personnel to influence the course of the war in the short term, ISW believes.

Experts also note that the Kremlin has continued its general scheme of temporarily appeasing nationalist communities by launching retaliatory missile strikes on Ukraine in an attempt to “move away from ongoing mobilization problems.”
