
At least 25 people were killed and 28 injured in an explosion that took place yesterday Friday at a coal mine in the northwest. Turkeyaccording to a newer report released by Health Minister Fahetin Koca.
The number of people stuck in the mine adits remains unclear.
It is estimated that about 110 workers were in the mine at the time of the explosion.
All night, rescuers were desperately trying to find those stuck.
The explosion occurred at a depth of 300 meters from the entrance to the mine in the city of Amasra at about 18:15 on Friday afternoon.
“We are facing a sad situation,” said Turkish Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu, who visited the scene of the tragedy with Energy Minister Fatih Donmez.
President Recep Tayyip Erdogan canceled scheduled meetings to travel to the region today. In a tweet, he expressed hope that the death toll would not rise again and that the miners trapped in the adits would be released unharmed.
The fatal accident brought back memories of the 2014 tragedy at a coal mine in the western Turkish city of Soma, where 301 workers died.
