Ukraine: Zelensky can talk to Putin? – BBC analysis

Possible negotiations between Zelensky as well as Insert end the war in Ukraine. BBC correspondent in Kyiv, Hugo Bachegaexplores scenarios, outlining the situation in detail.

In particular, in an analysis published Thursday on the British media website, he notes:

Turkey is trying to mediate this war by helping broker an agreement that has allowed Ukrainian grain exports and prisoner exchanges to resume between Ukraine and Russia.

This country, a member of NATO and on good terms with both Kyiv and Moscow, is now calling for a ceasefire.

It is difficult – almost impossible – to imagine how Ukraine will participate in any negotiations. Officials here say Russia may be trying to find a way to “freeze” the conflict as Ukrainian forces reclaim territory and force Moscow to abandon long-held positions.

At home, the Kremlin is under fire for its failures amid a chaotic military mobilization that has led to rare anti-war protests and the exodus of tens of thousands of men.

Russia stepped up its attacks on civilian areas in Ukraine, destroying critical infrastructure ahead of winter, in what Kyiv called Putin’s response to defeats on the battlefield.

The rocket fire on cities shocked some, angered many, but this did not affect Ukraine’s determination to fight.

Last week, following Russia’s annexation of four regions of Ukraine, a move Kyiv has called illegal, President Zelensky signed a decree formally making the prospect of negotiations with President Putin “impossible.”

But he left the door open for dialogue with Russia.

Ukraine, backed up by modern Western-supplied weapons, has vowed to regain all the territories it has lost, including those lost before 24 February.

Most Ukrainians seem to support this.
