The introduction of a single ticket of 49 euros per month for public transport throughout the country from January 1, 2023 was adopted by the transport ministers of the federal government and the states in Germany.
As part of the third government aid package, the federal government will provide 1.5 billion euros for the ticket, while the Länder will spend the same amount to fund the measure.
In return, local governments are asking for a plan to expand and finance public transport, especially in remote rural areas.
According to Federal Transport Minister Volker Wissing (FDP), the ticket will most likely be offered as a subscription, which, however, can be canceled at any time.
According to him, “the measure should be as simple as a monthly ticket of 9 euros”, which has been successfully used in the summer months.
“An attractive price will lead to a large number of new customers and will have a big impact on the climate, since an optimal result will be achieved in terms of the transition from vehicle to mass and therefore a large reduction in exhaust emissions. “, – the minister stressed and noted that the introductory phase could take up to two years.
