OUR Washington does not consider Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov’s statement that Moscow is open to talks with the West over the war in Ukraine a “constructive, legitimate proposal” to start dialogue, State Department spokesman Ned Price said today.
The head of Russian diplomacy has previously stated that Moscow is open to dialogue, but stressed that no serious proposals for negotiations have yet been received.
During a press briefing, Price stressed that if Russia’s intention to engage in dialogue is serious, then its first step will be to stop the “brutal attack” on Ukraine.
“We do not see this as a constructive and legitimate proposal for dialogue and diplomacy, which is absolutely necessary to end this brutal war of aggression,” a US State Department spokesman said.
