Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called several foreign leaders on Wednesday to ask for more support against Russia, which is set to annex several regions of Ukraine, Reuters reported.

Zelensky communicated with high-ranking officials of Great Britain, Canada, Germany, Turkey and other countries, calling for increased military support and increased sanctions against Moscow, and later thanked them for their support.

After a conversation with the head of the British government, Liz Truss, the Kyiv leader wrote on Twitter that “in response, it is necessary to intensify defense and financial aid to Ukraine.”

In another dialogue, the president obtained a promise from German Chancellor Olaf Scholz that Berlin’s financial, political and humanitarian support for Ukraine will not weaken, writes Agerpres. Scholz said that Germany will continue to support, including by supplying weapons, the protection of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine, the spokesman of the German government said.

“Thank you all for your clear and unequivocal support. Thank you all for understanding our position,” Zelensky later said in a video message that was broadcast on Wednesday evening. “Ukraine cannot and will not tolerate any attempt by Russia to occupy any part of our land,” he added.

Kyiv and the West condemned the illegal referendums in Luhansk, Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia and Kherson regions, with the help of which Russia is trying to justify their annexation, as a simulacrum of a national vote.

The United States has announced that it will work with its allies and partners to increase economic costs against Russia, and the European Union’s executive branch has proposed new sanctions.
