The head of Russian diplomacy, Sergei Lavrov, and members of the Russian delegation received visas to participate in the session of the UN General Assembly, the Russian Foreign Ministry reported, citing Reuters and Agerpres.
For weeks, Russia has criticized the United States for not issuing visas to members of the Russian delegation to participate in the 77th session of the General Assembly.
“Today, visas were granted to (Sergiy) Lavrov and a number of people who will accompany him” to the UN General Assembly, reports the Russian agency “Interfax” with reference to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia.
Moscow accused the US of trying to block Russia’s full participation in the UN General Assembly by delaying the issuance of visas for the Russian delegation. The work of the international high-level forum begins next week.
The Kremlin said on Tuesday that the US was “breaching its obligations” by not issuing visas to the entire delegation and said it was taking steps to hold the US and the UN accountable for the situation.
The delegation that Russia wants to take to the UN
Russia has asked the United States for 56 visas to allow Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and his delegation to travel to New York for the annual meeting of the United Nations General Assembly this month.
The 56 visas requested by Moscow include a team of diplomats expected to arrive in the US to prepare for the arrival of Lavrov and his delegation for a high-level meeting of the UN General Assembly in New York, which is expected to begin in September. 20.
Under the UN Headquarters Agreement of 1947, the US is generally required to allow foreign diplomats access to the United Nations. But Washington says it can deny visas for “security, terrorism and foreign policy” reasons.
For some time, the United States prohibited Russian diplomats at the UN and Russian delegations from moving more than 40 kilometers from New York without Washington’s prior consent.
In February, Washington imposed sanctions against Sergey Lavrov, accusing him of “direct responsibility for Russia’s new unprovoked and illegal invasion of Ukraine.” The sanctions freeze any assets Lavrov may have in the US and prohibit Americans from doing business with him at all.
