Germany is in talks to buy Israel’s Arrow 3 anti-missile defense system as part of Berlin’s efforts to bolster its armed forces following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Israeli Prime Minister Yair Lapid said on Monday in Berlin, Reuters reported.

Germany increased military spending after Russia sent troops into Ukraine in February, delivering aid and heavy weapons to Kiev as part of an international response.

“Israel will play a role in the development of Germany’s new defense forces, especially in the area of air defense. … it is connected with our complete commitment to the security of Germany, the security of Europe, the ability of liberal democracies to defend themselves,” Lapid said.

Israel’s prime minister described their talks as leading to a “possible agreement in the future” but declined to outline the cost.

What is the Arrow 3 anti-missile system

Scholz said Germany would strengthen its defenses by buying more air defense systems in the future and called the Arrow 3 system a “high-performance proposition,” but declined to elaborate.

The Arrow 3 interceptors are designed to fly outside the Earth’s atmosphere, where their warheads detach, turning into kamikaze satellites or “killer machines” that track and engage targets.

Such high-altitude knockdowns are designed to safely destroy approaching nuclear, biological, or chemical missiles.

“Yes, there is a plan to acquire Arrow 3, but nothing has been signed,” a German government source told Reuters.

The two leaders also discussed efforts to revive the 2015 Iran nuclear deal, with Scholz urging Tehran not to reject Europe’s proposals.
