Delegations of French and American deputies and senators travel to the self-ruled island of Taiwan amid escalating military tensions, raising concerns in Beijing, which has made it clear it does not see Western officials visiting Taipei.
It’s been nearly a month since US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s controversial visit to Taiwan in early August, and tensions in the region remain negative.
Recall that immediately after Pelosi’s visit, China began the largest military exercise it has ever held so close to the coast of Taiwan.
“The latest visits by delegations from the United States and France are likely to further anger Beijing, which condemned any diplomatic action that could give Taiwan legitimacy,” Al Jazeera notes in the article.
In particular, a delegation of eight US lawmakers headed by Florida Democrat Stephanie Murphy visited Taiwan on Wednesday.
“This is the sixth US delegation to visit Taiwan since China’s military exercises in early August,” Taiwan’s president said in a statement.
A total of 28 members of the US Congress have visited Taiwan since the beginning of the year, the highest number since 2013, according to Bloomberg News.
Since last Tuesday, however, five French senators have been on the self-governing island for a multi-day visit. It is worth noting that this is the fourth consecutive delegation from France to visit the island during the year, and the largest European delegation to visit since the start of Chinese military exercises last month.
According to Al Jazeera.
