Energy saving in the buildings of the European Commission is a priority, stressed the representative of the European Commission Balazs Uzvari.
“We aim to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 60% by the end of the decade compared to 2005,” he said, adding that “if we look at the period between 2015 and 2021, we will see a 20% reduction already in energy . consumption. During this period, we have saved more than 16,000 megawatts of gas and almost 8,000 megawatts of electricity. This is a significant reduction in gas and electricity consumption.”
At the same time, Mr. Uzvari said that the commission would go even further “based on the Gas Savings for a Safe Winter package and we are considering possible additional measures to further reduce energy consumption.”
For his part, the chief representative of the Commission, Eric Mamer, stressed that “in the summer, for example, many of the Commission’s buildings were closed.”
“Perhaps you should wear a sweater when you come here in the winter,” Mr. Mamer concluded in a calmer tone.
