Ukrainian army chief General Valery Zaluzhny on Wednesday claimed responsibility for a series of strikes on Russian air bases in the annexed Crimean peninsula, including one that caused massive destruction at a military base in Saki last month, Reuters reported.
In an article published in the state news agency Ukrinform, the commander of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Valery Zaluzhny, stated that the strikes were carried out by shells or rockets, without elaborating. According to him, ten combat aircraft were destroyed.
Ukraine has so far only hinted at its involvement.
This is in the context of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy recently telling members of his team to stop sharing information about Ukraine’s plans for Russia.
A series of explosions that rocked Russian military bases in Crimea, annexed by Russia in 2014, were planned by Ukraine, according to an internally leaked Kiev government report obtained by CNN through a Ukrainian official.
According to satellite images, on August 9, its air base in Saki in southwestern Crimea, near the naval headquarters in Sevastopol, was destroyed by a series of explosions that destroyed eight combat aircraft.
On August 16, explosions damaged an ammunition warehouse at a military base in the north of the peninsula. Russia called it sabotage, and Ukraine hinted at itself.
On the same day, several explosions rang out at the military airbase in the village of Gvardiyske near Simferopol, in the center of the Crimean Peninsula, Kommersant reports.
