The family of a young African American will sue USAwho was killed by police in his bed, according to his lawyer, in a case that sparked outrage in Ohio.

Donovan Lewis, 20, was killed early Tuesday morning in Columbus, the capital of this northeastern US state.

Body camera video carried by one of the officers who had an arrest warrant shows the officer, accompanied by a dog, opening the door to a room and then almost immediately shooting Lewis in bed.

An investigation into the incident was launched, with Columbus Mayor Andrew Ginter promising “full transparency” regarding the “tragic death of Donovan Lewis.”

“The family will go to court,” said Rex Elliott, the young man’s family’s attorney, without elaborating.

“Frame after frame of the video reveals the truth: three white police officers accompanied by an aggressive dog (…) murdered in cold blood a 20-year-old unarmed young man who remained in his bed following the orders of the police,” he stressed.

Columbus Police Chief Elaine Bryant said the officer fired when Lewis appeared to raise one hand while holding something. She added that only an electronic cigarette was found next to him.

Rallies are scheduled in Columbus this weekend to show “family support” and “start a conversation about police brutality” and “demand justice for Donovan Lewis,” said Ramon Obi, the organization’s CEO. JUST fighting for social justice.

Yesterday, students gathered on the Ohio University campus chanting, “Say his name: Donovan Lewis,” according to Twitter posts.
