Kyiv and Moscow accuse each other of strikes in Zaporozhye
Previously, Russian-appointed authorities in the Ukrainian city of Energodar have again accused Ukrainian forces of shelling the area near the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant, Russian news agency TASS reported.
City officials said two shells landed near a nuclear power plant where spent fuel is stored, the agency added.
Kyiv and Moscow blame each other for explosions near the nuclear power plant near the city of Energodar on the Dnieper, raising the risk of a catastrophic accident.
Moscow: radioactivity is normal
Meanwhile, the Russian Defense Ministry said that the radioactivity at the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant is within the normal range.
In a statement, the ministry said Ukrainian forces fired two rounds at the nuclear plant. Also, a Ukrainian drone crashed into the roof of a building that stores nuclear fuel and radioactive waste. Reuters was unable to confirm the above reports.
Team of the International Atomic Energy Agency on the way to Zaporozhye
It is noted that the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Rafael Grossi said on Monday that the IAEA group is heading to the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant. Mr. Grossi has been asking for months to be allowed to visit the plant, warning that there is a “real risk of a nuclear catastrophe.”
The Zaporozhye plant, home to six of Ukraine’s 15 nuclear reactors, was captured by Russian forces in early March, days after the February 24 invasion, and is close to the front lines in the southern part of the country.
In recent weeks, Zaporozhye has been a growing concern in the West, with the UN calling for an end to all hostilities around the site.
