“Intense fighting” is taking place in “almost all” of the Kherson region in southern Ukraine, which has been occupied by the Russians since the beginning of the invasion, the leadership in Kyiv said on Tuesday, according to AFP.
Heavy explosions were heard in the region during the day and night of Monday, the President of Ukraine said at a briefing on Tuesday morning, Agerpres notes.
“The armed forces of Ukraine have launched offensive operations in various directions,” the presidency also reported, declaring that several ammunition depots and all major bridges across the Dnipro had been destroyed.
The Ukrainian counteroffensive, announced on Monday, aims to recapture the city of Kherson, which had 280,000 inhabitants before the start of the war with Russia.

What strategic role does the Kherson region play?
Kherson Oblast is vital to Ukraine’s agriculture and plays a strategic role as it borders Ukraine’s Crimean peninsula, annexed by Russia in 2014 and used as a base for the current invasion.
On Monday evening, Moscow announced that it had stopped the Ukrainian offensive, which “failed miserably” in the Kherson and nearby Mykolaiv regions.
AFP notes that the statements of the Russian side could not be immediately verified by independent sources.
