The death toll exceeded 1,000 Pakistan from flooding caused by monsoon rains since June, according to new estimates released by Pakistan’s National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA).
In the last 24 hours, 119 people have died, bringing the total death toll to 1,033, with heavy rains continuing in parts of the country today.
According to the Pakistani government, more than 33 million people, or one in seven Pakistanis, were also severely affected by the floods and nearly a million homes were destroyed or severely damaged.
The NDMA noted that more than 800,000 acres of arable land were destroyed, as well as more than 3,400 kilometers of the country’s road network, and 149 bridges were washed away.
The monsoons, which typically last from June to September, are important for irrigating crops and replenishing water resources in the Indian subcontinent. But every year they also cause disasters and tragedies.
