Former Ukrainian MP Oleksiy Kovalyov, who joined Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s party but later supported Russian occupying forces in Kherson, was killed on Sunday, Russian sources said today.
“Deputy head of the military-civilian department of the Kherson region for agriculture, Aleksey Kovalev, surrendered after a bullet wound,” the so-called Investigative Committee of the Russian side said in a Telegram account.
Kovalev was attacked in his house on Sunday, August 28. A young woman who lived with him was also killed, the commission added.
Kovalev, 33, was elected as an MP from Kherson in 2019 and joined Zelensky’s party in the Ukrainian parliament. After the Russian invasion at the end of February and the Russian conquest of Kherson, she went over to the side of the occupying administration. At the end of June, another attempt was made on him.
Much of the Kherson region is currently controlled by the Kremlin, which is trying to Russify the region in anticipation of possible annexation. Moscow has introduced the ruble as its currency and encourages residents to obtain Russian passports.
