TEHRAN. Washington and Tehran are moving closer to an agreement on Iran’s nuclear program, acknowledging the failure of Trump’s approach to curbing Iran’s nuclear ambitions.

While talks that began in early 2021 appear to have failed, Tehran and Washington have reported in recent days that signing an agreement is much closer than ever before. Tehran continues to insist on the need for a mechanism to ensure that Iran will continue to benefit financially from the deal if a future US president chooses to withdraw unilaterally, as Trump did, which President Joe Biden cannot guarantee.

Iran also abandoned its earlier “non-negotiable” demand to remove the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps from the State Department’s list of terrorist organizations.

It is win-win for both sides to maintain dialogue on Tehran’s nuclear weapons.

While these concessions are not irreversible, they offer solutions to some of the obstacles to previous efforts to sign the agreement. It is considered encouraging that initiatives of a diplomatic approach have been accompanied by government efforts on both sides to promote an agreement within the two countries, in an attempt to convince the skeptical public on the one hand, and the conservative political factions of both countries on the other. others who are suspicious of any Washington-Tehran contact.

The two countries have a mutual interest in maintaining diplomatic dialogue, even if they do not ultimately intend to sign a new agreement.
