The Russian parliament announced that it would hold an extraordinary meeting on Thursday to discuss the situation around the nuclear power plant. Zaporozhye in Eastern Ukraine.

The official announcement released today by the Parliament says that on August 25 a meeting of the Council of the State Duma (lower house) will be held, at which the “threat to the safety of the Zaporizhzhya NPP” will be discussed.

Sergei Mironov, head of the pro-Kremlin Just Russia party in parliament, said the council, which includes the parliament speaker and party leaders, would issue a “tough statement” on Kyiv’s actions against the TV station, and urged the UN and other international organizations to intervene.

Moscow accuses Kyiv of shelling the station area, which is under the control of Russian forces but is still working with Ukrainian personnel. Kyiv denies accusations of bombing Europe’s largest nuclear power plant and says Russia is planning a “provocation” there to further justify its aggressive actions.

Last week, the Russian Defense Ministry said it could shut down the nuclear power plant if the bombing continues.
