On Monday, Russia again asked the UN Security Council to hold a meeting on Tuesday regarding the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant in southern Ukraine, Reuters, DPA and Agerpres reported.
The British news agency Reuters took the information from RIA Novosti with reference to the deputy ambassador of Russia to the UN Dmytro Polyansky.
As reported by the German DPA agency with reference to diplomatic sources, Moscow justified its new request by the fact that “Ukrainian troops continue bombing and attacking the plant.”
Russian troops occupied the area around the Zaporizhzhia power plant in March, shortly after Russia sent tens of thousands of troops into Ukraine. The plant, where Ukrainian personnel still work, remains close to the front line and has come under fire several times in recent weeks, raising fears of a nuclear disaster. Ukraine and Russia have blamed each other for explosions in and around a nuclear reactor complex in southern Ukraine.
The Zaporizhia NPP is of strategic importance for providing Ukraine with electricity, the largest nuclear power plant in Europe with six reactors and a useful capacity of 5,700 megawatts.
The largest nuclear accident in Europe occurred in 1986 at the Chornobyl NPP in Ukraine.
