Estonian Foreign Minister Urmas Reinsalu spoke on Monday for the adoption of new sanctions against Russia in the context of the ongoing war in Ukraine, DPA and Agerpres write.
“We must ensure that the price of aggression for the aggressor increases sharply before the onset of winter. “The seven packages (of sanctions) have not yet put enough pressure on (Russian President Vladimir) Putin to end the war against Ukraine,” Reinsalu told Estonian Public Radio.
The new sanctions package proposed by Estonia would include a full energy embargo, new restrictions on goods and people, and a ban on Russian citizens traveling to the EU.
Last week, the government in Tallinn submitted a formal proposal for the eighth package of sanctions to the European Commission.
After tightening visa rules for Russian citizens, Estonia, a Baltic member state of the EU and NATO, asked to suspend the issuance of tourist visas for Russian citizens throughout the European Union.
“Someone has to take the first step, hopefully an agreement at the European level can be reached in one form or another,” Reinsalou said.
On February 24, under the pretext of protecting the Russian-speaking community, Russia launched an unprovoked and unjustified invasion of Ukraine. The war raised serious fears among neighboring countries, especially the Baltic states, which have large Russian-speaking communities, that they could become the next targets after Ukraine.
