OUR Japan is considering deploying 1,000 long-range cruise missiles capable of hitting the coastal regions of North Korea and China, according to the Japanese newspaper Yomiuri.
The missiles will be modified to increase their range from 100 to 1,000 kilometers, a Japanese newspaper reported, citing government sources. According to the same source, they will develop mainly around the Nansei Islands, in the southern part of the country.
Japan has increased its defense spending in recent years. So far, however, he has avoided developing long-range missiles capable of hitting targets in other countries.
Tensions in the region escalated this month after Speaker of the US House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi visited Taiwan. Beijing fired missiles near the island, which it considers part of China, as well as in Japan’s EEZ.
