Ukraine’s army has quick access to highly accurate satellite imagery in its war with Russia thanks to a fundraising campaign, dpa reports.
According to the contract with the Finnish supplier ICEYE, the Ukrainian government has the right to use a continuous radar satellite that provides images even at night or behind clouds. Ukrainian TV presenter Serhiy Prytula launched the funds from fundraising.
According to media reports, approximately 600 million hryvnias ($16.2 million) were collected, which were actually intended for the purchase of Turkish Bayraktar combat drones. When the manufacturer donated the drones, the funds raised were used to purchase access to the satellite.
The combination of reconnaissance images with modern weapons will open up new opportunities for the Armed Forces to fight against the Russian occupiers, Ukrainian Defense Minister Oleksiy Resnikov wrote on Facebook on Friday.
“Let’s assume that soon any HIMARS, M270 or MARS II, as well as any self-propelled weapon or weapon with precision projectiles, will be able to destroy the enemy more effectively,” he said.
The mentioned weapons systems are long-range salvo fire systems. In recent weeks, Ukraine has already used them to strike Russian ammunition depots far behind the front line. (Source Agerpres)
