USA: New $775 million aid package for Ukraine

The Pentagon has announced a new $775 million military aid package for Ukraine, which mainly includes missiles for U.S. Himars multiple launch rocket systems.

The package also includes 15 Scan Eagle unmanned reconnaissance drones, about 1,000 Javelin anti-tank missiles and, for the first time, 40 MaxxPro MRAP anti-mine vehicles, according to a Defense Department official. Projectiles compatible with British weapons systems, which London handed over to the Ukrainians, will also be available to Kyiv.

The same official said this is the first time the US has provided Scan Eagles drones to Ukrainian forces, but another country has already supplied them to Ukraine in the past, without elaborating.

With this new package, U.S. military aid to Ukraine after Feb. 24 is now $10.6 billion.

The official noted that Russian troops “did not advance completely” on the battlefield, partly due to the use of American Himars systems by Ukrainians. But he acknowledged that Ukrainian forces have not recaptured the territory, although “we see a clear weakening of Russian positions in many areas.”

While the US has so far insisted that it is only supplying Ukraine with “defensive” weapons, the official hinted that the goal now is to support Ukrainian forces in a counteroffensive they are preparing to recapture the southern city of Kherson. “An anti-mine weapon is a good example of the fact that the Ukrainians must put forward their forces and win back territories,” he said.
