Russia’s Defense Ministry said on Thursday that the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant in southern Ukraine could be shut down if Ukrainian forces continue to bomb the facility, a move Kyiv denies it is doing, Reuters reported.
The two camps blame each other for the attacks on Europe’s largest nuclear power plant.
During the briefing, the head of Russia’s radioactive, chemical and biological defense forces, Igor Kirillov, said that the plant’s backup systems were damaged during the bombing.
Kyrylov also said that in the event of an accident at the nuclear power plant, radioactive material will cover Germany, Poland and Slovakia.
Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant was seized by Russian troops in March. It remains close to the front line and has been repeatedly bombed in recent weeks.
Russia and Ukraine accuse each other of striking the plant.
