
About 70 firefighters today put out a fire on the railway bridge in Southwark, central Londonwhich forced the suspension of train traffic in the area and the evacuation of some buildings, the London fire department said.

In images posted by the fire department on Twitter, smoke is seen coming from a road that passes under a railroad bridge that has multiple vehicles on it and is engulfed in flames. Southwark and London Bridge railway stations were closed.

“There is a lot of smoke coming from the fire and those who live or work in the area are advised to keep windows and doors closed,” Fire Commander Wayne Johnson said in a statement posted on the fire department’s website.

Trains on London’s Jubilee Underground line were also affected by the fire, with the London fire brigade confirming smoke rising from a platform at London Bridge tube station was the result of a railway bridge fire.
Rail Kent & Sussex said on Twitter that the fire had spread to a car park where “two electric vehicles caught fire”.
