London: Great railway bridge fire brought under control

Big Fire which broke out on the railway bridge in Southwark, in its central part Londonresulting in the suspension of train traffic in the area and the evacuation of some buildings is now under control, the London fire department said.

The fire department, which sent 10 fire engines and about 70 firefighters to the scene, said there were no reports of casualties and that an investigation into the cause of the fire had been launched.

Footage tweeted by the fire department shows plumes of smoke billowing from a road that passes under a railroad bridge, where the fire department said some vehicles were “completely engulfed in flames.”

Southwark and London Bridge stations were closed.

“There is a lot of smoke coming from the fire and those who live or work in the area are advised to keep windows and doors closed,” Fire Commander Wayne Johnson said in a statement posted on the fire department’s website.

Trains on London’s Jubilee Underground line were also affected by the fire, while the London fire brigade confirmed that the smoke coming from the platform at London Bridge tube station was caused by the railway bridge fire.

Rail Kent and Sussex tweeted that although the fire has been brought under control, it is still burning.

“Once it is safe, we will check the place, but there are no changes to services with diversions and cancellations in South London at the moment,” he said.
