At least six people were killed and 16 wounded on Wednesday in a Russian bombardment of Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city, local authorities said, with President Volodymyr Zelensky condemning the “vile and cynical attack,” AFP reported.

The mayor of Kharkiv Igor Terekhov first announced in Telegram the data about three dead and ten wounded, which was later revised by the governor of the region, Oleg Synegubov.

“Unfortunately, the number of dead and injured as a result of the explosion (…) is higher: six people died, 16 were injured,” Synegubov said in Telegram.

“At the place of shelling, in a residential building, a strong fire broke out,” Igor Terekhov added.

The President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyi, for his part, on Wednesday evening spoke about the “completely destroyed” apartment building as a result of Russian strikes.

“A vile and cynical attack on the civilian population, which has no justification and demonstrates the powerlessness of the aggressor,” he wrote in Telegram. “We will not forgive, we will take revenge,” Zelensky said.
