The Ministry of Defense of Russia on Tuesday signed state contracts for the production and supply of ballistic missiles and air defense systems for the Russian troops worth more than 500 billion rubles (almost 8 billion euros), writes CNN.
As reported, the ministry signed contracts for the production of Sarmat intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs), S-500 air defense systems and the supply of Su-34 bombers at the annual international military-technical forum “Army-2022”, which is held near Moscow.
Russian President Vladimir Putin said in June that Russia’s first intercontinental ballistic missile system, the Sarmat, would be operational by the end of 2022, the state-run TASS news agency reported.
What is known about Sarmat or Satan 2
The intercontinental ballistic missile “Sarmat” or “Satan-2” was developed at the State Rocket Center, which is part of Roscosmos, and the manufacturer is the Krasmash plant.
The intercontinental ballistic missile “Sarmat” or “Satan-2” is capable of carrying a fissionable payload weighing up to 10 tons to any point in the world, via the North or South Pole.
Moscow claims that it cannot be intercepted by any existing defense system and that it has a range of 11,000 km.
On June 21, Vladimir Putin said that Russia will continue to strengthen its armed forces and that its new Sarmat intercontinental ballistic missiles will be ready by the end of the year, Reuters reports.
- “We will continue to develop and strengthen our armed forces, taking into account potential military threats and risks,” Russian President Vladimir Putin said at the time.
On May 23, the Director General of the space agency “Roscosmos” Dmytro Rogozin said that Russia plans to put into service about 50 new intercontinental ballistic missiles “Sarmat” by the end of autumn this year.
On April 20, Russia announced the successful test of a new Sarmat intercontinental ballistic missile, which Vladimir Putin called a “unique weapon”: “It will make Russia’s enemies think.”
The RS-28 “Sarmat” intercontinental ballistic missile has been under development in Russia since 2009 and is also known as SATAN 2 (as it is supposed to replace the current R-36M2 “Voivode” intercontinental ballistic missile in the Russian arsenal (SS-18 Satan, according to NATO coding), the service life of which is coming to an end.
Moscow claims that the new Sarmat missile cannot be intercepted by any existing defense system and has a range of 11,000 km. “Sarmat” can carry up to 10 nuclear warheads capable of destroying an entire metropolis, the Russian authorities claim.
