UK: Writer Nicholas Evans dies

British writer Nicholas Evans, who wrote the best-selling book The Horseman, on which the movie was based, has died of a heart attack at the age of 72, his agent said today.

His death came on August 9, but it came almost a week after the statement: “United Agents is sad to announce the death of renowned writer Nicholas Evans, who died suddenly on Tuesday as a result of a myocardial infarction.”

Born in central England in 1950, Nicholas Evans studied law at Oxford before becoming a journalist for the local press and then for television.

He was best known for his hugely successful first novel, The Horse Whisperer, which was published in 1995 and sold 15 million copies worldwide.

The novel tells the story of a young girl who is seriously injured in a horse accident in which her best friend is killed and the animal is also severely injured. To cure her, her mother decides to go on an expedition to Montana, where the “keeper” Tom Booker lives, who has a reputation for taking care of the most difficult horses.

The book was filmed by Robert Redford, director, actor and producer of this hymn to wide horizons, untouched nature and horses.

The film, first shown in theaters in 1998, starring Scarlett Johansson and Kristin Scott Thomas, was nominated for an Oscar but did not win any awards.
