OUR Salman Rushdie and his supporters are the only ones responsible for Friday’s attack against a well-known writer, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Kanaani said at a press briefing today.
Rushdie recovers after being repeatedly stabbed while performing in public in New York State.
According to Kanaani, freedom of speech does not justify Rushdie’s rantings in his anti-religious articles.
“Salman Rushdie exposed himself to the wrath of the people by insulting the holy and sacred things of Islam and breaking the red lines of 1.5 billion Muslims,” Kanaani said.
“In the attack on Salman Rushdie, we do not consider anyone worthy of censure and condemnation, except for himself and his supporters … Nobody has the right to blame Iran for this,” he stressed.
The Iranian spokesman added that Iran has no other information about who attacked Rushdie other than what was reported in the media.
