Ukraine said on Sunday that Russian troops crossing the Dnipro River in the Moscow-controlled southern city of Kherson were at risk of being stranded after all existing bridges were decommissioned, AFP reported.

“The only way for the occupiers to cross the river is the pontoons near the Antonivsky bridge, but they will not be able to fully meet their needs,” regional deputy Serhii Khlan told Ukrainian television.

According to him, “Russia is moving its command centers from the right bank of the river to the left, knowing that in case of escalation, it will not be possible to evacuate them in time.”

There are 20,000 Russian soldiers on the right bank of the Dnieper

He estimated 20,000 Russian troops were on the right bank of the river and said they could still “cross the damaged bridges on foot.”

At the beginning of the invasion of Ukraine, Russian forces captured Kherson on the Dnieper, the only regional capital they had managed to capture so far.

They have advanced several tens of kilometers to the west, but the three bridges (two road and one railway) that cross the river in the area they control have been repeatedly bombed in recent weeks.

The most important is the Antoniv bridge on the outskirts of Kherson, which has been shelled by rockets several times since the end of July, in particular on the night from Saturday to Sunday.

Another bridge is the one in Nova Kakhovka, 50 kilometers to the northeast, which was hit this week.

“Yesterday (Friday) our Armed Forces finally and effectively hit the bridge near Novaya Kakhovka.

The Russians can no longer transfer equipment, ammunition and even food for their troops,” Serhii Khlan said on Saturday evening.

Britain’s Ministry of Defense confirmed at its daily briefing on Saturday that “the two main road bridges that give access to the Russian-occupied part of the territory on the west bank of the Dnieper are likely to be out of service”.
