USA – Twitter: A plan to combat misinformation ahead of the midterm elections

OUR Twitter Inc. yesterday, Thursday, unveiled a plan to combat the spread of election-related disinformation by revisiting previous strategies. However, voting and political rights experts said the strategy may not meet the requirements for the measures needed for the upcoming midterm congressional elections.

The social network has announced that it will implement the civil rights policy it unveiled in the 2018 November 8 midterm elections. This policy is based on flagging or deleting messages with misleading content, with a focus on messages aimed at stopping voting, or statements aimed at undermining public confidence in the electoral process.

Twitter said in a statement that several steps have been taken over the past few months “to update available media” related to primary voting. By tagging a post on Twitter, a company indicates that it does not recommend its content or that it is not being shared with more users.

The San Francisco-based company is currently embroiled in a legal battle with billionaire Elon Musk over his proposal to back out of a $44 billion Twitter takeover deal.

Musk argues that Twitter messages should only be deleted if they contain illegal content, a sentiment shared by many in the tech industry.

But experts in civil rights and online disinformation have long accused social media and tech platforms of not doing enough to prevent the spread of fake content, including the idea that President Joe Biden did not win the 2020 election.
