Turkey – Chechnya: “Secret” meeting with Kadyrov in Sochi

As early as August 5, all eyes were riveted on the meeting of the President of Turkey. Recep Tayyip Erdogan with its Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putinin Sochi.

However, on the same day, away from prying eyes, the Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu and head of Turkish intelligence Hakan Fidan they had a meeting with him in Sochi Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov.

The meeting, which Kadyrov himself will publish after the fact through his Telegram account.

“We had a rich and productive informal discussion, during which we agreed on the need to establish close cooperation between Turkey and the Chechen Republic on various issues. Mevlut Cavusoglu expressed hope that this informal meeting would be the beginning for further development of relations and establishment of contacts. I agreed with him and noted that both sides would benefit from joint initiatives,” Chechenos wrote, stressing that the Turkish delegation invited him to visit Turkey and that he accepted this invitation.

Muslim Kadyrov was previously accused of espionage, as well as the murders of Chechen dissidents back in Turkey. He even, for his part, from time to time harshly criticized the side of Erdogan for various cases related to Ukraine (expressing dissatisfaction with the fact that the Turks sold drones to Kyiv), but also with the “insides” of Chechnya (regarding, for example, the park named after Dzhokhar Dudayev in the Turkish province of Kocaeli).

Turkey puts up with Chechen leader“, – writes the journalist Fehim Tastekin on the Al-Monitor website, after seeing a “political shift” on the part of Ankara on this issue, a “political shift” that Tastekin interprets as the Turkish leadership’s openness not only to Kadyrov himself, but also to Putin.

On the other hand, of course, this discovery also causes concern: in the ranks of Kadyrov’s Chechen enemies, who have been living in Turkey for years, in the ranks of the Kurds, who fear that Chechen fighters may take part in the next Turkish military operations in Syria and Iraq, but also in the ranks of the Turkish the opposition, which believes that tensions may rise in the run-up to the elections.
