Syria: Killed by Turkish drone attack in northeast

At least four people have died today in a Turkish drone strike on a Kurdish-controlled city in northeast Syria, Kurdish sources and the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

The attack took place near a hospital in Qamishli.

According to the Observatory and Kurdish officials, Ankara has stepped up drone attacks on Kurds in Syria in recent weeks following a July 19 summit in Tehran between the leaders of Iran, Russia and Turkey.

According to the same sources, last Saturday a similar attack in Qamishli resulted in the death of four people.

Back in late July, the Syrian Democratic Forces claimed the lives of 13 people in drone strikes attributed to the Turkish military.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has threatened since May last year to launch a new military operation in northern Syria against the Kurds in order to create a “security zone” 30 kilometers wide.

Ankara, however, reportedly did not receive the green light at the trilateral summit in Tehran on July 19 for a large-scale military operation against the Kurds in northeast Syria.
