The Biden administration’s next aid package for Ukraine will be $1 billion, one of the largest ever, and will include ammunition for long-range weapons and armored medical vehicles, three sources told Reuters on Friday.

The package will be announced on Monday and will add to the roughly $8.8 billion in aid the United States has provided to Ukraine since the February 24 invasion by Russia.

The officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said President Joe Biden had not yet signed off on the next arms package.

They warned that the cost and content of the arms packages could change before they were signed.

However, if signed in its current form, it would be valued at $1 billion and would include munitions for HIMARS, munitions for the NASAMS anti-aircraft missile system, and up to 50 M113 armored medical vehicles.

Recently, the Pentagon decided to allow Ukrainians to be treated at the US military hospital in Germany, near the Ramstein Air Base.

Last Monday, the Pentagon announced a separate package of security assistance for Ukraine worth $550 million, including additional munitions for the High Mobility Artillery Missile Systems (HIMARS).

The White House declined to comment.

What is known about HIMARS and NASAMS

HIMARS plays a key role in the artillery duel between Ukraine and Russia, while Russian troops are “soft” and can make small movements on the front line in Donbas in eastern Ukraine.

To date, the United States has sent 16 HIMARS to Ukraine, and on July 1, it committed to send two NASAMS air defense systems.

It is not known whether there are NASAMS launch vehicles jointly produced by Raytheon Technologies Corp and Norwegian Kongsberg in Ukraine.

Earlier, the USA undertook to send 200 M113 armored personnel carriers to Ukraine.

APCs equipped with medical equipment could give Ukrainian soldiers a much better chance of survival, who could then be sent to Germany for further treatment.

In June, the government in Kyiv announced that 100 to 200 Ukrainian soldiers die every day.
