Ukrainians and Russians are engaged in heavy fighting near the eastern Ukrainian city of Donetsk, with both sides reporting heavy casualties on Thursday, DPA reported, citing Agerpres.
Troops loyal to Moscow are trying to dislodge the Ukrainian army from positions near Moscow, according to unanimous military reports from both countries.
The city of Donetsk itself has been controlled by pro-Russian separatists since 2014, but the Ukrainian army continues to control large parts of the region of the same name.
On Wednesday night, fighting was reported around the village of Pisky, located west of the former Donetsk airport. The separatists have already announced the seizure of positions that have been disputed for years. These claims cannot be independently verified.
According to Ukrainian data, the towns of Maryinka and Krasnohorivka, southwest of Donetsk, have also recently come under heavy shelling. In addition, the center of Avdiivka was bombed. It seems that these efforts are aimed at freeing Donetsk from its grip. The industrial city has recently been bombed several times by Ukrainian artillery.
Also, Russian troops continue to try to break through defensive positions in the area of the Sloviansk-Kramatorsk agglomeration in the Donetsk region. According to the General Staff, fighting continues southeast of the Bakhmut junction.
