The show of strength by the Taliban began after US President Joe Biden announced on Monday that al-Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri had been killed in a UAV strike in Kabul.
Zawahiri was reportedly holed up in a house belonging to an associate of the Taliban interior minister, Sirajuddin Haqqani.
