Voters in Kansasmidwestern conservative state USAtook place yesterday tuesday in favor of the constitutional provision on abortionin the first major litigation on the matter since the Supreme Court overturned its ruling that granted the right at the federal level.

State Electors rejected a proposal to revise the state constitution which would replace the existing text of the Basic Law and pave the way for either stricter restrictions on abortion or a ban on these procedures.

62% of voters rejected the proposal, while 38% supported it.with 78% of the projected votes counted.

Joe Biden welcomed the results of the vote. The U.S. president said the victory for abortion rights advocates in Kansas, a deeply conservative state, showed “a majority of Americans agree that women should have access” to such procedures, according to a news release issued by the agencies.

“Congress should heed the will of the American people and restore the provisions” overturned by the Supreme Court in June by overturning its decision in Roe v. Wade (1973), which was granted the right, he added.

Yesterday’s hearings were closely watched as they are seen as an early indicator of whether the abortion issue is mobilizing voters ahead of the midterm elections in November, and if so, to what extent.
