The Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemns the bombing of Olenivska prison and the killing of Ukrainian prisoners of war, calling for international sanctions against Russia.
“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs strongly condemns the bombing of the prison in Olenivka and the killing of Ukrainian prisoners of war. These brutal crimes committed by Russia require international investigation and sanctions. We express our condolences to the families and full support for Ukraine,” the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a message on Twitter.
According to the Russian Ministry of Defense, which released the names of 50 dead and 73 wounded on Saturday, a prison in Olenivka was bombed on Friday, as a result of which most of the 193 Ukrainian prisoners of war were killed or wounded.
Russia says the strike was carried out by a HIMARS multiple-launch missile system supplied to Ukraine by the United States, as Kyiv seeks to retake territory controlled by pro-Russian separatists in eastern Ukraine.
Ukraine has denied it would ever fire on a civilian position – especially one where its own people are – and accused Russia of orchestrating the attack as revenge for Ukrainian nationalists among the prisoners from Mariupol a few weeks ago, Agerpres said.
